What is Kundalini Sadhana?

Sadhana means daily spiritual practice. It is the foundation of all spiritual endeavor. Sadhana is your personal, individual spiritual effort. It is the main tool you use to work on yourself to achieve the purpose of life. It can be done alone or in a group. Sadhana is whatever you do consistently to clear your own consciousness so you can relate to the infinity within you. Before you face the world each day, do yourself a favor—tune up your nervous system and attune yourself to your highest inner self. To cover all your bases, it will include exercise, meditation, and prayer.

During what are called the “ambrosial hours” (the two and a half hours just before sunrise), when the sun is at a sixty-degree angle to the Earth, the energy you put into your sadhana gets maximum results. Your world is quieter. It’s easier to meditate and concentrate before the hustle and bustle of the day begins. If you absolutely cannot get up early in the morning to do sadhana, then do it some other time! Doing sadhana at any time of the day or night will benefit you.

Develop a regular sadhana and you take control of your life. Develop a deep sadhana and you open the doors of experience. Commit to meet your higher Self each morning and your decisions and your life become original; your life will bear the signature of your soul; your radiance will express the meaningful intimacy of the Infinite in each moment. Immerse yourself in the joy of victory that comes from starting each day with a powerful sadhana and every challenge becomes opportunity.  (Source: 3ho.org)

ABOUT THE PRACTICE OF KUNDALINI YOGA

it’s yoga, but not as you know it…
When the frequency change comes we need a technology to re-adjust the nervous and glandular systems. Thinking and talking about the changes are not going to help us shift our frequency. We need a technology that can go in at the cellular level and raise everything a notch to keep up with how the magnetic field will change.– Yogi Bhajan
Involving a dynamic blend of physical postures, breathing, movement, stretching, meditation, mantra and relaxation, Kundalini Yoga can be practiced by almost anyone regardless of age, fitness, occupation and experience.
According to ancient eastern wisdom, Kundalini is the store of latent energy lying dormant at the base of the spinal column. Through the practice of Kundalini Yoga, this energy source is stimulated to rise up the spinal column and activate the pineal gland. Once activated, the pineal gland enables you to use the energy of the mind and emotions in a more positive and effective way.
A regular Kundalini Yoga practice builds the capacities of self-awareness and inner strength in order to let go of negative emotional programming and help you fulfill your highest potential.

BENEFITS OF KUNDALINI YOGA

Kundalini Yoga is a safe and effective way to reduce stress and anxiety and bring balance to the body, mind and soul. A regular practice of Kundalini Yoga activates the glandular system, strengthens the nervous system, expands lung capacity, purifies the bloodstream and builds core body strength.
The medical benefits of practicing Kundalini Yoga are related to the way it helps to activate and rejuvenate the glandular system and, in particular, the pineal gland.  The pineal gland produces the sleep hormone melatonin and is vital in helping to maintain balance in the body system. The effects of ageing and stress have a direct impact on the functioning of the pineal gland and this can lead to sleep disorders and an overall decrease in health.
According to physician, Dr Dharma Singh Khalsa, who has devoted his life to healing through yogic techniques, the type of meditation practiced in Kundalini Yoga is the most effective way to channel energy to specific glands and organs to make them function better, counter stress and restore balance.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN A TYPICAL KUNDALINI YOGA CLASS

Each Kundalini Yoga class and experience is unique to the individual.  The best thing you can do before you begin a Kundalini Yoga class is relieve yourself of any expectations, as it works in many different ways. The outcome of a Kundalini class is never the same.  However you can expect every Kundalini Yoga class, as taught by Yogi Bhajan, to include six major components:
1. Tuning in with the 'Adi Mantra' – we tune in to connect with our inner wisdom and to protect ourselves during the practice
2. Pranayam (breathing) or warm-up - to protect the body from injury
3. Kriya – a set of exercises taught in a specific order to work on a particular theme
4. Relaxation – a chance to deeply relax and absorb the benefits of the kriya
5. Meditation – to still the mind
6. Close with the blessing song, May the Long Time Sun Shine Upon You and three long chants of the mantra ‘Sat Nam’ (truth is my identity) – to close and seal the practice
Many kriyas and meditations in Kundalini Yoga include mantra and chanting. The use of mantra works on the chemistry of the brain, which in turn relaxes the mind and the body. This form of meditation can help those who may find silence and stillness very challenging.
A typical Kundalini Yoga class is between 60 and 90 minutes.
